Cybersecurity Basics Every Small Team Should Know

Cybersecurity Basics Every Small Team Should Know

Cybersecurity doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. For small teams, a few foundational practices can dramatically reduce your risk of a breach.

    Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Every account should have a unique password. Use a password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password to generate and store them securely. Never reuse passwords across services.

    Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds a second layer of protection beyond your password. Enable it on every account that supports it — especially email, banking, and cloud services.

    Keep Software Updated

Outdated software is one of the easiest attack vectors. Enable automatic updates on all devices and applications. This includes operating systems, browsers, and plugins.

    Train Your Team

Most breaches start with a phishing email. Run regular awareness sessions so your team knows how to spot suspicious links, attachments, and requests.

    Back Up Everything

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different media types, with one stored offsite (or in the cloud). Test your backups regularly.

    Limit Access

Not everyone needs access to everything. Use the principle of least privilege — give people access only to what they need to do their job.
